Tips on how to strengthen my small block 400 for a GMC Sierra (not a race or a show truck)?
I have a GMC Sierra 89 with a small engine block 400 engine is lacking a cousin who is a mechanic. I plan to buy an Edelbrock 650 carb, Edelbrock intake, Dynomax Blackjack Headers and 2 flowmaster super 44 muffler. Is this a good introduction to the conduct of trucks per day. I do not want too much speed, I simply turn off the sound.
I own a shop and a small block 400. First, the 650 CFM carburetor is little small for the engine. The carburetor that came on them was at least 750 CFM. Rochester Quadra-Jet. Other elements that must be installed to work very well. The header pipe size must be at least 1-5/8 "for the best rate. Many Heads are only 1-1/2 "tubes, so watch it. If you use very few tubes, will be held the engine and not get the best gas Milego. What I did was install some small planes in the front (primary) of the carburetor, and was even more important in the (secondary), aircraft back. Mine is very good fuel as long as I stay out of the barrel of four, but the good thing is that the power is there if I want. Be careful, the 400 is a hot engine, and radiator you have in your truck is not big enough to cool the engine. You need at least one in line 3, and execute a 180 degree thermostat in winter and 160 in the summer months. The 400 is a higher end engine power, and not injured more than 4000 rpm for long. It makes all its power in the low speed range, since it is a torque monster. From 2,000-4,000 rpm This engine is all muscle, and run almost anything on the road. You might consider running at least a 3 "exhaust system for better performance and fuel economy. As for sound, you're right in making the point that you have chosen. Do not say no to the carburetor 650, but I say that the 650 will die of hunger in the air from the engine. CFM means cubic feet per minute, one refers to the amount of airflow from the carburetor. The MRC set when combined with a series of projects that works well with this amount of air flow produces optimum performance and fuel economy. I'm glad to help, good luck!
